Part 7
5) I want to find a way of releasing stress and relaxing.
The average person sees learning English as an additional burden, a job they have to put much effort and time into. As a winner you are different. To you, learning English is a means of releasing stress and "recharging your batteries". You might even be able to meditate through English. Yes, learning English is a source of power and energy because it helps you explore and use your untapped mental and physical potential. English can pick you up when you are feeling down or sad. Instead of just listening to music, listen to an English audio book and let the sound of the voices calm you down. Let the words and phrases filter through your mind until you are totally relaxed and cheerful. It might take a while until you reach the point where listening to English calms you down makes you feel good but once you get there, you will have a powerful technique of self-management at your disposal.
6) I want to extend my social and professional networks. When you learn English to become a winner you will meet a lot of new and interesting people who have diverse cultural backgrounds and a positive mental attitude. Winners connect with other winners -- people who try and look for the benefits in any situation instead of focusing on the negative side. Learning English gives you the opportunity to expand your social and professional network far beyond the borders of your country. I've always been interested in people and their thoughts. That has been my main reason for learning English and once I had acquired the basics I started to use my language skills to meet new people and share experiences.
As a matter of fact, I made my best friends through learning English. For example, in the mid-90is when the Internet was still in its infancy, I placed an ad on the Usenet (which was quite popular back then) saying that I was looking for an English language enthusiast who would like to create an English learning website with me. After a while an ESL professor from the UK responded and we struck up a relationship that involves friendship, business and fun.
