Part 5
2) I want to learn more about my own language and culture.
Yes, that's right. When you learn English you will also learn more about your mother tongue and your own mentality. Most people learn their native language "automatically" without making a conscious effort. Learning English you will often take a closer look at your native language and you will be surprised how much you still have to learn about it. Since a language reflects the mentality of its speakers, you will also take a fresh look at your own culture and way of thinking. There is this saying in English -- "You don't know what you don't know" and it's very true. You take it for granted that you know your own language well and that you don't have to learn any more about it. However, when you start learning English in earnest, you will see that this has a very positive effect on your language skills in general as it raises your awareness of the importance of language.
3) I want to advance in my career and become financially independent.
If you want to increase your capability of earning a living, you need English. Almost everybody knows that in order to secure a high paying job, you have to meet certain requirements such as good computer skills and a great command of English. The difference between the average person and a winner is that winners know why they need English in their jobs. Most people think that English is just the "language of international business" and that's why they want to learn it. Winners know the reasons why business people around the world communicate in English. You are a winner too and when you start applying the methods outlined in this book you will also gain a deeper understanding of the underlying success principles in business.
