Hi torsten!
I couldn't catch all the news on the BBC this morning because I had an appointment with the Doctor. Even though I heard that the former Liberian President Charles Tailor faced trial in the Hague. He is charged of genocide, torture,... He is the first african president who faced a trial at the International Tribunal. Another news about me: I'll get an english test at the India Ambassy on Friday July 17, 2009. I'm worried because the result of my application depends on it. You know, I applied for an English Course in india. Would you like to give me some advice. |

First of all i would like to thank the organizer who brought the situation to get each other. my question is as followes, I think listning and hearing are completly different although they are done with same sense organ.Listening needs concentration like listening to news and the like wheras hearing is unintentional, one can hear whatever the serounding creates whith out attention eg. noise. so that If one want to listen to something while doing another thing will result in some other unnecessry points. let us take your example listening while driving loses concentration to driving and start to concentrate or think what we want but we can hear the horn of other cars and etc. This could be today"s issue to get arround net time i will back to you with great idea. Thank you very much. Derara |

hello everybody In fact I tried this methode, not only with English language but also with German, French and Italian. I ascertain that the only way to learn is to catch any free moment you get, for exemple when ironing or cooking. I also repeat lists of word in the underground, on my way home, or waiting at the doctor's consulting room. Tests are really useful, I watch them when I have a free moment at the office. But the most important thing is to keep learning, years after years, being in touch with all mean English language (papers, news, foreign friends, business partners). |

When I started learning Welsh, I bought some CDs of Welsh nursery rhymes (simple, repetitive songs designed for children), and I played them over and over. I could hear the sounds the words made, without knowing what they all meant. It was wonderful when I heard a song and realised I knew all of the words, and understood them too!
Another tip is to use a browser that has a spell-checker built in and set it to the language you are learning. I have this set up in Firefox. When a word is spelt incorrectly a red wiggly line appears underneath it. To start with you can simply click on the correct word, but later, have a go at correcting your spelling.
This doesn't work if you use a word that is spelt correctly, but is wrong in the context. )
The bug yellow and is my picture hold son. - This is nonsense, but all the words are correctly spelt.
"Spelt" is an interesting word. 'Spelt' is the old form and is used regularly in Britain, but very rarely in America, where 'spelled' is the preferred version. Some similar words are 'dreampt/dreamed' 'swept/sweeped', 'lit/lighted'... |

Hi Jenny!
It's great to improve english because this language allows us to communicate with many people around the world. There is no limit with english. I'm jose from Madagascar. Please tell me about your country. I'm on the forum often reporting the BBC NEWS to Torsten because he told me doing that. Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the man first moon landing . See you! Dear Torsten,
Of course consistency in learning is the most important point. Watching movies, TV programs, reading books, listening to the music are very important. All of this make our understanding better and better. But what about our speech? Wise man (I don't know who was that wise man unfortunately) said: "If you know something, but can't express it, your knowledge has nonsense". I think, conversation with native speaker is the best way of learning. Fortunately, I have that environment at work, where I'm practicing my language. In one week two of our offices will be combined in one big office, and I will share the room with native speaker!!! During last two months I'm very busy at work. Coming home, I can't watch BBC. I can't stand news during last years. Destroyed cities, dead bodies, terrorists are the main subjects nowdays. That's why I watch the Discovery (Science, Travel and Living) channel. Sometimes I listen to the Voice of America. I reccomend to all here to read topics by Alan. They really help me. Also little funny stories by Kitosdad are very interesting and you can improve your humor During last month I haven't read any books, haven't listened to the radio and haven't watched the BBC All I have done is to attend lessons in this forum. Now I'm going to attend English courses and conversation club at the Plaza where I'm working.... _________________ incomplete.... |

Hi Torsten!
I just was at the club. We discussed about man dictatorship at home. First everyone definited the word dictatorship. Next we divided into two groups. First group was for and the second group was against. Finally we played something like mime ,drama. About the news: Obama apologize after his comment pertains to the racism. Manuel Zelaya return back to his country. Again an air plane crash in Iran. North Corea criticize Illary Clinton.
