I think we can all agree that money plays a central part our lives. There are hundreds if not thousands of expressions and idioms with and about money some of which Alan has included in his Expressions and phrases with money. In addition there are songs about money. Here are some lines out of a Toni Cottura song:

"... I've around the world and back
and everywhere is the same old thing.
Everybody is chasing after the money,
but all they're catching is rain...
"

I think this is so true -- how many people actually live to earn money? And this is only because somebody (the media, the society, their family, their 'friends') tell them they have to 'make money' just because everybody makes money? There is a poem by Richard Armour that sums it all up:

"Workers earn it, spendthrifts burn it,
Bankers lend it, women spend it,
Forgers fake it, taxes take it,
Dying leave it, heirs receive it,
Thrifty save it, misers crave it,
Robbers seize it, rich increase it,
Gamblers lose it, I could use it
."

So, what category do you fall into when it comes to money?

There is a popular idiom in China:" Money is not empitent, if you have no money is impossible (means you cannot do anyting)". :(

Hi Torsten!

Curiously you didn?t get much response on this topic until now. I mean, as almost everybody is supposed to earn a life. Don?t you think so?

Now, since I?m not capable to earn a ship in Monaco, I must satisfy with a horse in Germany. And let me assure that is not the most worse choice. Of course, there is not any longer much money for a glamorous car or a holiday on pretty islands, but if you have to care a horse you don?t have any time for such things.

I?d like to hear some more opinions.

Michael

hello!

I don`t live to earn money. But! It`s very importand to have some.
When I was a teenager I needn`t have much money, It was enought to have money for ticket to the cinema, clubs, or to buy some new clothing.
But now I have family, and I know how much we need to spend safety (is it good word?) life. It`s not only food, cloths, credit for house. I would like to stand my children in good stead, to give them good education, could pay for language, dance or sport courses and to spend with them two or three weeks a year together in nice place. I would like to get a chance to let them go for pay school trip.
I don`t request too much, do I? There are ordinary needs I think.
On the other hand I couldn`t let my husband and me to work all days and nights, Living only for money could screw up our family ties- they are too heavywieght for me.

We are not created to make money but to earn money necessary for survival.
As you know that the love of money is the root of all evil so we have to be careful when we have ventered into the business of making money

I'm sure everybody knows how important money is for living. But too much love for it causes all bad problems. We need to have enough, not more than enough. I remember one philosopher (I can't remember his name) saying that "people should have enough money for living or become affluent and if there is more than enough, it can cause greed!"
