It would have to be a joke. _________________ English as a Second Language You can read my ESL story Present Simple |

For starters, the word 'joke' is countable while 'fun' is uncountable. You can tell a joke and you can have fun. A joke is something said that causes laugher or at least a smile. Fun on the other hand is something that amuses you or makes you feel good.
Let's see what other forum members have to say on the topic.
Best regards, Torsten

Hi,
Just to add a bit though I feel that Torsten has covered everything. A joke can be really of two types -a spoken one like an amusing story and a practical one whereby you play a trick on someone. This is often on April 1st when you try to persuade someone that somehting very unusual has happened but it turns out to be wholly imagined.
'Fun' is essentially enjoyment.

.... and just to add a little more, it may be worth bearing in mind that the kind of 'play a trick on someone' kind of joke might not be everyone's idea of fun. Sometimes the people who have had a joke played on them are very unhappy about it. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hi Allan Sir,
What is opposite of a "Joke", is it callled no Joke or Anti Joke, please explain me sir. Moreover, Fun and Joke more or less same meaning although it is decribed as uncountable and countable noun.
We enjoy your lessons, in which enjoy is uncountable noun while the lesson is countable. Am I right Sir?
Thank you

Hi Shanthisethuraman,
A lot of questions here. 'Fun' is an uncountable noun. 'Joke' is a countable noun and can often mean ' a funny/amusing story'. It can also be a verb and suggests 'say something amusing.' 'Enjoy' isn't a noun but a verb.
The opposite of 'joke' in the sense I have just explained would be 'a serious matter/story' as a noun and 'be serious' as the opposite of 'joke' as a verb.
Hope that helps _________________ English as a Second Language You can read my ESL story Passive Voice |

Hi,
There is a lot of work being done on improving the site and that is the reason why there is a delay in sending the essays. The next one should come shortly.
Best wishes,
