Simple Present Questions (Unit 8) Sat Nov 13, 2004 14:54 pm  Simple Present Questions (Unit 8)

How to ask a question

In order to ask questions you need the verb "to do", a personal pronoun and the infinitive:

example: "I go." The question: "Do you go?"

"Do" --> "to do"
"you" --> the personal pronoun
"go" --> the infinitive

Do I speak English?
Do you watch TV?
Does he open the window?
Does she like rock music?
Does it work??
Do we go to the theatre?
Do you work?
Do they read books?

Be careful: "He, she, it - the 's' must fit" but:
Do not put the 's' at the end of the verb! Only use the infinitive!
The 's' has to be put at the end of the verb 'to do':

--> "does he/ she/ it "?

Very Happy Exercise: Try to ask some questions! -Ask me! Very Happy

In Unit 9 you will learn how to make negative sentences in the Present Simple.

Yes, you are right, Office. We use "does" only with he, she and it. By the way, the word "u" does not exist in English.
Regards,
Torsten

Hi msudan,

There are no 'sirs' on this forum Wink In a formal letter, you can write 'Dear Sirs' in the salutation.

To answer your question - 'to be' is the infinitive form that results in 'I am', 'You are', 'He is' etc in the simple present, and 'will be' is used with reference to the future. "I will go home after work, I think."

Hi gomez, hi pghai,

All of your examples are fine except for the 'watch-TV' example. It should read

"Does he watch television?"

Take care,

Ralf
