When you take out a large loan over many years, you don't start paying off the bulk for some time.

In reality, you pay some principal with the very first payment you make, but to pay the bulk of your loan would require you to make payments for a long time or more than half of the amortization period!

Bulk is used here to mean a large part as you have indicated in your comment.
