Hi Violino
The test sentence is an indirect question: - Can you hear what he is saying?
The following are direct questions: - Can you hear him? - What is he saying?
An indirect question is basically a question within a question. When you have an indirect question, the introductory question will have interrogative word order (Can you hear), but the following clause normally does not.
Here are a couple more examples of indirect questions:
- Do you know when he left the office? - Can you tell me how much that sofa costs? . |
Dear Mr.Torsten, Could you explain me differences between direct and indirect questions or give more examples? For me it is a little bit hard to feel that difference. Beforehand, thank you a lot |

Hi Spartanka,
Amy has already given very good examples of indirect questions and explained the difference between direct and indirect questions. Which part of her explanation did you not understand and why?
As for more examples of indirect questions, you can create them yourself by starting your questions like this: Do you know when she ....? Can you tell me why he ....? Did you hear that they .....?

Hi Torsten!
Thank you for more examples. Now I understood difference between direct and indirect questions. My mistake was in traslation.

Thanks Alan,
I always try to to find some logic behind each and every word we use. This sort of explanation and understanding will make me more confident.
Thanks a ton !!
