Hi Dongocan...

More common would be to "tell" someone to do something

You have to use tell him.
The other options use have to use a proper preposition.
So you speak with, you say or talk to.
see you soon.

Use of say and tell. #51 (permalink) Sun Nov 29, 2009 5:07 am   Use of say and tell.

I know there are rules about the use of say and tell.
We use say when we want to say something to somebody. On the other hand, we use tell when we want to tell to somebody, something.
For instance:
I want to say many things to Peter.
Please tell me the truth.

Am I right or wrong about it?

Please,I would thank your important comment.

Many thanks Mr.Alan and Mr.Torstan
I wont to ask about Mr.Torstan`explanation
[There are differences between(AMONG) those verbs although their meanings are indeed very similar. Let's take a look]
As I know (between) is used when comparing between two things
and (among) when it`s more than two things

Hello everyone and Alan,

The options are:
(a) saying
(b) speaking
(c) telling
(d) talking

I was wondering if someone could summarize the differences among these similar words. Is it absolutely impossible to use a word other than the correct one? How does the native speakers feel if I use the wrong word?

Hi Bob,

Just to add something to what Torsten has said, I have made a sentence which icludes these 4 verbs, which you may find useful:

As I was SAYING (using words to describe something) before you came in the room, I was TELLING the others (informing them/this verb usually has an object) about John who is SPEAKING (giving a speech) tonight at the club and we were TALKING (having a conversation) about the possibility of going to listen to him.

Best wishes

Alan
