Hi Semak,

The word I wanted in this sentence was abridge which as you can see from the rest of the sentence means to make shorter. Sometimes a long novel is abridged so that it can be shown as a play on tv.

Adopt and acquire wouldn't make sense in this sentence, both of which generally mean to get hold of.

Hi Alan, I have a collection of the most popular English books,all of them retold by several writers , so retold by means abridged by?
Thanks in advance ,I've been learning in this place for a year and everytime I feel more confident that it was a good idea to learn in this way.

If you abridge something you take the original and condense it - make it shorter.

If you retell something, you put it in your own words, maybe adding a new twist.

they aren't the same.
