What does "net result" mean? And what is "nett"?

net result, net income, etc

Does net with this belong to the same 'word family' as netto (= 'dry' weight) ? My dictionary also gives the form nett.

(And I suppose that it’s a bit older than sport games with a ball and a net/basket…)

Hi Tamara,

The answer to my mind is yes. Nett is just an alternative spelling. The word apparently has links with 'neat' conveying the idea of something minus all deductions. It almost gives the suggestion of 'pure'.
