Hello Mr. Micawber,
I am not certain in the expression: " they put off by the pretentions ..." I thought that they are misled by their pretention or they are deceived by their pretentions. I don't know it is good or not.
Many thanks. |

"they are put off by the pretentions ..." = they are offended/repulsed by the pretensions of others. They dislike the pretensions of oenophiles. _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Hello Mr. Micawber,
If I hadn't found what means the oenophile I wouldn't have misunderstood your explanation. I met this word first in my life. I read it on the Google because in the Oxford Dictionary forgot tu put it in. Now I am cleverer. I know in Greek: oin/oinos means in English: wine. So oenophile = someone who enjoys wine, especially as a connoisseur or is a lover of wine or the love of wine. I 'm sorry my grammatical mistake: they ARE put off by the pretentions...
Many thanks. Kati Svaby
The pronunciation of onophile is interesting. I can't read out because i am forced to write on an iPad, and iPads don't have JAVA, unfortunately. |
