Make for/make it to #4 (permalink) Wed May 31, 2006 19:33 pm   Make for/make it to

Hi flower,

If you say: We are making for the town, this simply means that we are going in a direction towards the town - that is as it were our destination.

If you say: We are trying to make it to the town, this suggests you have problems because there are obstacles in the way - there could be a flood /an earthquake/ an uprising or whatever that makes it difficult to get there. You would say: The climbers eventually made it to the top of Mount Everest at their third attempt.

'Make for' and 'take for' #6 (permalink) Fri Jul 09, 2010 10:44 am   'Make for' and 'take for'

So, there are two options, which is 'make for' and 'take for' to express our way into destination, on the right route/track without obstacle. Is there any word that should combine with 'for' instead of 'to'? Example: get for? or get to?

Have you confused the expressions in that post Valentino?
You have provided words that combine with 'for'. Do you mean is there any word that should be combined with 'to ' instead?

"I am trying to get to the bank." (not 'get for')

There is no such word as 'alot' in standard English. You need to write 'a lot'.

Sorry. It was a typing mistake. Thanks a lot. I'll be more careful.
