Hello Beeeneees.
what is the difference between in these sentences?
Don't wake the baby up because I've just got her to sleep/I've had her sleep/I've made her sleep.
I'm so confused about this grammatical rule. |

Don't wake the baby up because I've just got her to sleep. <-- she has just gone to sleep.
I would not use the other two. I would consider them incorrect. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hello Beeeneees,
Please check, are these sentences right?
1.The best solution to reduce aging is to have a walk.
2.We were given a vocabulary test but today we are being given a grammar test, our teacher is always moving the goalposts.
3.we say,I believe in God, I believe you.
why do we use ''in '' here and why not use there?
thanks |

I didn't see these earlier. (They were posted shortly before I had connection problems from the look of it.) Obviously no one else noticed them either (Perhaps because they were addressed to an individual). You need to start a new thread for a new subject. Sorry if the information comes too late.
For (1) I would say: One of the best ways to avoid the effects of ageing is walking regularly. (You can't reduce ageing and there is no solution to it - you can only delay it.)
(2) Needs to be separated into two sentences: In the past we were given a vocabulary test, but today we are being given a grammar test. Our teacher is always moving the goalposts.
(3) You say you believe in God. I believe you. or You say, 'I believe in God." I believe you. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

There are two possible meanings:
1) My heart hurts because I want you. 2) My heart hurts because I can see the pain you are going through.
Which one you mean would be determined by the wider context. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Dear Mr Alan, I have looked up this word in Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. It is said that "my heart bleeds (for somebody) is used to say that you DO NOT feel sympathy or pity for somebody". Could you please explain for me?
Thank you very much. |

That's correct, Homikkhue. It's an ironic expression where what you say means the opposite of what you mean. It is used where someone doesn't feel pity, but may feel a tinge of envy or jealousy over a situation.
"I have to go to work in Barbados for the next month." "My heart bleeds for you. I'm sure you'll have a thoroughly miserable time while the rest of us trudge to work through wintry weather."
Note that 'my heart bleeds for you' is not the same as 'my heart hurts for you' which is the expression asked about earlier in this thread. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
