1. Give it to me. 2. Give me it.
Please tell me the correct sentences? My teacher said (1) is wrong. How about you? Is there a rule? |
I'm throwing in the towel. If your teacher thinks (1) is wrong, there is no hope. _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Hi Quoc,
My advice to you is to talk to your teacher and ask the questions in class.

| I cannot understand how anyone could justify that view. |

Welll I googled it.. and there is extensive writing about it.. This form was once believed as Scottish... read on..

| Lancashire is a rich area in which to study accent, dialect and grammar as Willem explains: "If I were say, playing with my pen in a very annoying way, and you were to take the pen away from me, I might tell you, "Hey, that's my pen, give it me!" but there's also speakers who wouldn't say "Give it to me!" but who would say "Give me it!" and then there's also speakers who would say "Give it me!" This last order "Give it me!" is not very common in Britain in general, but what we find in Lancashire is it's actually the preferred pattern." |

| No, I am referring to the position that "Give it to me" is ungrammatical. The Scotticism, according to the file, is "give me it." |
