Reduced adjective clause #1 (permalink) Fri Sep 08, 2006 2:14 am   Reduced adjective clause

Hello Teachers,

Please look at this sentence.

The woman living next door is a nurse.

To my knowledge, the sentence can be reduced from both " the woman who lives next door is a nurse" and " the woman who is living next door is a nurse"

My question is " How do we know which original sentence is it reduced from?"

Thanks in advance

Hi

Certain spices are good for some occasions and some for others, Jupiter.

We do not normally use the verb live with ing.

Hi Jupiter

It's not possible to know with 100% certainty whether the original sentence contained "who is living next door" or "who lives next door".

But I think most people would assume that the woman is probably not living next door temporarily (e.g., not planning to live there for just a few weeks or months) and therefore most people would assume that your original sentence used the simple present tense.
