Correct answer: (b) deliver

I'm going cofused with this sentence. shouldn't he deliver a speech?

Hi Judith,

Thanks for your note. You're absolutely right in saying that you 'deliver a speech' but you can also say 'deliver a paper'. There is a difference. Making or delivering a speech means that you stand up and talk on whatever the topic is and the range of topics can of course be enormous. Delivering a paper means that you have written something usually on an academic theme and usually in an academic setting. That is why in the sentence I chose a topic 'language learning on the net' , given by a Professor and gave the setting as the college. 'Delivering a paper' is a formal occasion before a select audience and the subject matter is invariably of an academic nature and the 'paper' is usually published later in a specialised journal. At the same time of course the theme throughout the exercise is on 'paper' and 'papers'.

Hope this helps to explain my intention.
