Hi Tom

Are you still reading Mickey? Laughing

Yes, the verb do is slang for kill. I'd say you're most likely to encounter that usage in books about gangsters and tough private detectives.

The phrasal verb do in can have the same meaning.

Now you brought it up, Amy, I would like to know how many of his novels have you read? Isn't he a bit too difficult for a non-native speaker? Slang, slang and slang! Was he a famous writer in the US in his time? And, most important of all, did you enjoy him? If yes, which of his novels, in partcular?
