A visit is a short stay in someone's house or in a town/country, etc: they are on a visit to Germany; we'll pay a visit to the new supermarket; let's pay your mother a visit.
Encounter has the sense of 'meeting', especially by chance: on my way home, I encountered a huge traffic jam; along the journey we encountered many difficulties.
It can also mean a short conflict, among other definitions: he had a serious encounter with some annoying photographers. |
