Contrast vs. contradiction #2 (permalink) Fri Sep 15, 2006 10:10 am   Contrast vs. contradiction

Contrast is a sharp difference: the red roofs make a pleasant contrast against the blue sky; after the Mozart let's hear some jazz by way of a contrast.

Contrasting colours are colours which are very different.

Now contradiction is 'saying the opposite'. Contradictory is 'incompatible (which cannot fit together)', 'inconsistent' or 'which says the opposite': we had contradictory opinions on the subject.
