Blue is associated with unhappiness/sadness. In jazz the blues is where the singer is singing a song of sadness.

Yes, blue can be used in different phrases meaning different things. A blue sky scenario is a very positive situation while a blue person is sad.

You can refer to the "blue night" of Michael Learns To Rock...

http://www.lyrics007.com/Michael%20Learns%20To%20Rock%20Lyrics/Blue%20Night%20Lyrics.html

....
When the blue night is over my face
on the dark side of the world in space
When I'm all alone with the stars above
you are the one I love
....

my 2-cent idea! :D

I wish you were here
Don't you know, the snow is getting colder,
And I miss you like hell,
And I'm feeling blue

This is a Blackmore's night's song piece. I didn't understand this expression before :).

feeling blue = feeling melancholy and sad.
Have you heard othe genre of music called 'the Blues?- These pieces are meant to invoke a 'melancholy' kind of feeling and sound.
