I was taught to use "who" not "that" when referring to a person or people. However, I see "that" being used more often that who. Example: They are the ones that always do the work. Is is it proper to use the word that in this case?

Hi,

'That' is fine for people and things. The main differences between 'that' (relative pronoun) and 'who' (and other 'wh- relatives) are: 1) We don't use a preposition before 'that' 2) We don't use a comma before 'that' because 'that' is always a 'defining' relative and 3) We use 'that' after superlatives as in: This is the most boring book that I have read/Here is the tallest building that is visible in the town.
