Pamela, I'm sure you're a good sport, even if you're not much of a sportswoman!

Hi Conchita
Thanks for your nice words. Very Happy But do you agree that to be not a good sport is not much of the sportsman? That was my answer and I know the answer.

Yes, Pamela. Being a good sport or a sporting person doesn't necessarily have anything to do with games.

After rereading your question (obviously) more carefully, Pamela, I realise I shouldn't have answered 'yes' to it. Although the second part of my reply is still valid, you can of course be a good sport as well as a sportsperson.

Being a good sport may also (or otherwise) entail persevering in an adverse (or at least unpleasant) situation.

For instance:

"Wow, I had no idea it would take all day to rake the leaves. Thanks for being such a good sport, Tom!"

This implies that Tom helped her rake the leaves, that she'd told him (or implied...) that it would not take all day to rake the leaves, that Tom volunteered to help her rake the leaves, and that Tom did not quit until the job was finished.

A good sportsman (or "sportsperson" if PCness is your thing) is one, for instance, who bags three trophy deer, keeps a hunting buddy from accidentally shooting at a far-off hunter, and drains four cases of beer (at 24 cans per case) in the space of one week.

Oops, sorry Conchita. You were right. I meant to be not a good sport in my question. As I said in my first post of this thread. I’ve amended my post. To be not much of the sportsman is poor sport.
