Hi

Is it the correct word order: President <name of the person> of <name of the country>?

Five minutes ago I heard it on the radio (BBC World Service) and now have also found it on the Internet… but still continue having my doubts :)

President Jacques Chirac of France?

?

Hi Tamara,

Yes, that's perfectly all right. President Smith of Nomansland or you can say; The Nomansland President, John Smith.

the Russian President Vladimir Putin

I know and use both these forms, thank you.

But what about the possessive Russian's President?

You probably mean Russia's President? Seems to be more informal than the President of Russia.

Yes, Russia's President, sorry for the typo.

Thanks.

Could anybody put the above possibilities in order on the level of 'formality'?

Hi Tamara

I'd put them in order this way (my personal opinion):

President Vladimir Putin of Russia
Russian President, Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian President Putin
Russia's President
Pootie-Poot 8)

How's that? ;)

Thanks, Amy, I like your list.

Probably, I'd also add Mr. Pootie Poot for English speakers... and some very informal expressions - for Russian ones :)
