Hi! Teachers,

Can the phrasal verb have objects? Such as 'We got by on the little income our mother earned from her part time job.'

Also, can it be divided into "get by" and "on" or is it just a fixed phrasal verb?

Thank you so very much.

Hi,

Phrasal verbs behave as do ordinary verbs and can of course take objects. In your example
Quote:
get by on
the phrasal verb is get by suggesting survive and the preposition on takes the object. In fact you could say: get by on with/without/ and so on.
