"Cutting edge" has two meanings; one is the edge that cuts. (noun)
You cut cheese by applying the cutting edge of the knife to the cheese and then pushing down on the knife.

The other meaning, often used when referring to technology or research, means the most up to date, the most advanced. (adjective, and has a hyphen)
My new television is loaded with cutting-edge technology.
