This expression simply means that you cannot follow something or you don't understand. You ask why beyond? The only explanation I can give is that it comes from beyond my understandingor going much further than I can understand. There is another expression beyond the blue horizon, which means outside the world as we know it.

No. Someone can be out of his/her mind with worry or with joy.

Something being beyond me simply means that I don't understand it.

In Germany we sometimes say: 'It's too high for me'. It means the very same. It's too difficult for me to understand.

We can simply understand "beyond me" as "out of my reach", "out of my understanding".

Hi Alan! I just wanted to ask you if the expressions "it's beyond me" and "it's way above my head" are interchangeable.
Thank you!

Hi,

Both have the same idea but 'way above my head' is much stronger suggesting that you really do not understand it at all.
