Alex, looking up the meanings or definitions of words is helpful as long as you don't overdo it. Keep a healthy balance between studying the definitions of words and learning information. Of course there is a close relation between both activities but all too often people get stuck with cramming words into their heads thereby missing the main point: Advancing in their careers, developing projects, establishing new business contacts, etc. How many words does the English language contain? How many of them do you really need to 'know'? How many of them are you able to use properly?

Hi Torsten,

I have big problem for English. I am from Mongolia. English must be my second language. Also I promised to my boyfriend that I will to take TOEFL test in before my birthday. (2nd of June) I have to pass this exam. Because If I pass TOEFL, I can study master degree for graphic design. He bought TOEFL book to me . I tried it, but it is so difficult to me. very strange new words, and difficult sentences. He has professional english and Japanese. He always told me if you do not know something, do not hesitate to ask me. But I do not want to ask him. Because I want to show him who am I. But I do not know, how to prepare, I want to love this english.... How ?

In my opinion, unless you have some great work experience (founded company or work for a big name firm), or you have something stellar about yourself, I wouldn't apply to a school if you are out of the middle 50% range.

I think it's just too competitive right now; the number of applicants is increasing so much.
