Hi Alex, welcome to our community. I think your scores are 'really bad', then it might be better not to have them send to schools you are applying at. Have you taken the GMAT yet or you still preparing for it?

Hi Torsten!
I do the test tomorrow, but I just learned for 10 days. So I am not too enthusiastic! If the scores are bad, I have to retake the test. But since I don't know the final score immediately after the test, I should send it nevertheless?

Alex, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you tomorrow. As for sending your score, I think you can do that any time and if you send them yourself, you can select the schools you want to send your scores to. Now relax and show them who you are tomorrow.

ok, I failed with a 470 score! :/
Ok, I must admit, I only learned for one week, and even during this week I had my bday-party. So the circumstances have not been best.
following: I want to do some Master of finance in the states. So I realized, GMAT is not required everywhere. Mostly the want you to have the GRE.
Is GRE much easier? At least I shouldn't underestimate it either!

Hi Alex, if you really want to get a good GRE score, I'm sure you will attain it. It's probably a good idea for you to get into the habit of working towards your goal on constant basis. Preparing for a test for just one week is not the best approach. Do some activities every single day... Let me know what you think.

You are definately right. I started reading books in english 1,5 months ago, and I also start reading the economist frequently. But that will take its time to improve my english.
I didn't score too bad in the math part. If I remember well, it was around 40 percentile, little bit more maybe. but the verbal part was horrible. 15 percentile?
How can I improve this part best? Especially my vocabulary is pretty bad. I consider buying a vocabulary trainer cdrom.
Thanks, Alex |

to be honest I didn't even know you had tests on this site. I just googled for some gmat-forum last time.
I had a look at the exercises right now. I have to look up almost every word. Is this how I improve my vocabulary, or isn't a vocabulary trainer better? If you can recommend me any other websites for a good preparation, I would be very grateful!
That was the first mistake, that I didn't really inform about all the sources in the web. I only bought the princeton review 'how to crack gmat' and that's all.
Cheers, Alex |

hey torsten,
since you've been a great help I try to ask you here one question regarding gre, or even more generell all the tests. application deadline 15.12 for a school means, that the scores have to be available till then, or does the test-date have to be before 15.12.06 and the scores send in afterwards?
many thanks, alex |

concerning your recommended thread:
I subsribed to the economist last week. And will read it regularly. As a help I should buy a portable electronical dictionary I guess. (edit: I shuttle everyday almost 2 hours to work, so taking a lap-top with me is inconvenient). Because the one issue of the economist I bought last week, is filled with a lot of words I don't know. And I just finished 2 engl. books the last 2 months. But I don't really feel like having learned a lot of words. I guess that's because I didn't look up the vocabulary, I had not understood.

Hi Alex, you are definitely on the right track with your own GMAT prep program. If you read the economist you don't have to look up every new word. Try to understand the gist of the article and concentrate on the information in the text rather than on new vocabulary. You need to see a new word several times in various contexts in order to recognize and understand them. Remember that you don't want to learn 'just new words'. That's the approach of many people who don't have a long-term strategy. You want to learn new information, gain knowledge, make a career and create value. Knowing many English words should be one the tools you have to achieve your goals.
Let me know what you think. By the way, what do you do for a living?

Alex, if the application deadline is December 15, this means that you have to submit all required documents by this date. In most cases this will include your GMAT or GRE scores. However, any decision is made by a human being so there is always the chance of talking to them and negotiating different conditions.

Sounds easy. But at least I should look up the words, I need to understand the context. Sometimes that's what really breaks my enthusiasm reading the economist (already in the first paragraph which describes the generell attitude of countries, I don't get the main clue, that's embarrassing).
I am writing my diploma thesis in computer science at CERN in Geneva. Later on I want to apply for some business-schools in the states to graduate in a second study like Master of Finance, Master of Management..., some Business-stuff.
