Finish vs. end #16 (permalink) Sun Jan 03, 2010 23:47 pm   Finish vs. end

End is more often used to imply stopping or breaking something off, or deliberately bringing it to a close.e.g,

I can't decide how to end this story

Finish is more often used in the sense of completing a task or activity, or reaching the end of something.e.g,
Finish a sentence

finishing schools! hmm...for refining / polishing some sorts of cultural, social skills.
Just learning about that for the first time.
The art of learning, especially the English language, is a continuous one.

This exercise is an addition my pathetic and virtually empty literary knowledge base.

Hello Gr8sang,
Some answers in the thread already explain its use in the original example.
Can you please explain what you mean by 'over here' so that we can help you further?

Hi Gr8sang,

Your question about using "Finishes!" is not clear enough to understand. If you can use the words you want to learn about in sentences we will able to make some explanations.

Hi, please note the correct spelling of the word 'you'. Also, in English we start every sentence with a capital letter.

Hello, Torsten!

With my last English Grammar Tests, Elementary Level which is called 'Finish vs. End' I've only got 5 questions right. And I don't completely understand in which cases we should use the verb 'finish' and in which cases we should use the verb 'end'. Could you explain it, please?

A'm looking forward to your answer!
Best regards,
Akira, Ukraine

'What have you been up to?' = 'What's new?', 'What have you been doing?'
