"Once he had emerged from depression, Styron traced the source of his pain to incomplete mourning of his mother's death ... "

Does this "incomplete" mean that he hasn't overcome the sadness?

"incomplete mourning" means he hasn't finished mourning his mother's death; he hasn't mourned it enough.
