"They have also tilled fields, reared and harvested crops...and cleaned, nursed the sick and dying, lain out the dead, ..."

Does "lain out" here mean "buried"?

Actually the correct word there is laid and I am not sure what it means. If it means buried, and maybe it does, it should have said buried!

present......past......past perfect

lay.............laid........laid
lie..............lay.........lain

lay takes an object. (they have laid out the dead)
lie does not take an object. (they have lain in bed all day)
