Hello Amalmusica,
Your question is a bit strange if you ask in this way. Normally, for English learners will say I have never gotten this question. But your question is a good one. It say that you are right because in every countries have a different time.
For the example, in my country now, it is quarter past one in the evening, or one fifteen in the evening and my problem is that what time is it now? If I ask you this question, you are going to tell me the time in your country and you might say it is five o’clock now. So I can’t get the right answer because I will have one more question in my mind is that: is it five o’clock in the morning or in the evening? But if you tell me that it is 17 now, I’m sure that it is five o’clock evening in you country.
Because of the different, people made a 24 hours and it’s the one you use now. The 24 hours was made so when you say it is 17 now is completely right. You are right for using it, don’t worry. It's right to use the other sentences like it's fourteen twenty now or like half past 17.
In my country, people never say it is 17 now, but they will say it is five o’clock now. Because we are in the same country, the same place, we stand in front of each other and asking, so five o’clock now is work well, and sure I know that it's in the evening or in the morning.
By my best,
Good luck,
