Hi,
For 8:40am, is it acceptable if saying/writing "eight forty" or "twenty to nine"?
In speaking, I prefer to use "eight forty". How about in writing?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

c) 2:30 p.m
It is two past thirty in the evening.
It is two thirty in the evening.
It is half past two in the evening.
d) 5:00 a.m
It is five o'clock in the morning.
It is five in the morning.
e) 10:15 a.m
It is ten past fifteen in the morning.
It is quater past ten in the morning.
f) 7:47 p.m
It is seven past forty five in the evening.
It is quarter to eight in the evening.

Hello every one!

Here are my answers.
a _ It is nine forty before midday.
b _ It is six twelve after midday.
c _ It is two thirty after midday or it is half past two after midday.
d _ It is five o'clock before midday.
e _ It is ten fifteen before midday or it is a quarter past two before midday.
f _ It is seven forty seven after midday.

My question is :
Why we can not say " It is a half past three "

Hello every body time is it? time is it?
7:45 - seven forty-five
11:06 - eleven (oh)
six 7.15 - fifteen minutes past seven
7.45 - fifteen minutes to eight
: 5:30 - half past five
7:00 - seven o'clock
(but 7:10 - ten past seven
7:20 - twenty past five
00:00 – midnight
12:00 - midday or noon
3:15 - fifteen minutes past three OR a quarter past three
06:10 - ten past/after

Example: 7.45 - fifteen minutes to eight

Another possibility of saying '15 minutes past' is: a quarter past

Another possibility of saying '15 minutes to' is: a quarter to

Another possibility of saying '30 minutes past' is: half past

Example: 5:30 - half past five
