Hello, I want to know how you decide the names of time. Like morning, noon, afternoon, evening and night. I also want to know what should be the correct greeting according to time. Like, if I meet someone at 9:00 pm then what should I say? I can't say goodnight because I believe that's like saying Bye. When should we use good-afternoon? Should 2 pm termed as noon or afternoon? What should be the greetings at midday and midnight? Thanks, Santak |

Hello Santek,
There is no exact definition of what time those particular periods of the day start and end. This is a rough estimation, but views vary from person to person and sometimes from season to season: morning - 1am to 12 noon noon/midnight - always 12 o' clock afternoon - 12 noon to 4 or 5 pm evening - 4 or 5pm to 8 or 9pm night - between 8pm and 4am
You are correct that 'goodnight' is usually a closing remark rather than an opening remark. If you meet someone at 9pm you could still say 'good evening' as a greeting. If it is later, then it is better to find an alternative greeting (e.g. hello).
2pm is afternoon - Noon is always 12 o'clock midday.
At exactly midday the greeting can either be 'good morning' or 'good afternoon'. Both are acceptable. Once midday is past, then the greeting should be 'Good afternoon'. At exactly midnight, then 'goodnight' would be correct but see the note above about avoiding using it as a greeting.
Of course, as an alternative when you aren't sure which to use, you can usually use 'good day'. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
