I answered two times: c) there is no guessing
Test your answer tells me that I have marked b) There is no knowing.
You should correct this mistake.
I will never have ten out of ten in this test.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Alfwm, it seems that you simply confused the wrong answer with the correct one. The correct answer is 'There is no knowing' but you chose 'There is no guessing' two times which is incorrect.

If you answer the question correctly the system will accept it. Trust me on this ;-)

I find "there's no knowing" a great set expression. The first time I heard it (about 9 years ago)
was in the following "poem" from the movie Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory:

Quote:
[...]There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Is it raining, is it snowing
Is a hurricane a–blowing

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a–glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing.

The Rowing Song

And that's how I got the correct answer at this question of the test :-)

Hi Mitra,

'I wonder what she'll get up to next' means that you are curious to know what she'll be doing next. 'Get up to' suggests that she's going to do something mischievous (naughty).

Dear Alan;
Thanks a lot for your complete response. I have another question about this rich test, could you please tell me 'There is no knowing' means No one knows about what she will want to do next?

Hi Mitra,

Yes, that's the idea. It also has the idea of 'It's a mystery'

I'm sorry but I think I didn't get the meaning of these two expressions: to get up to; There's no knowing. Could you clear this for me, please?!

Hi Margoto,

'Get up to' is used as an idiom that suggests that you are going to do something unusual/shocking/playful as in: Whatever will she get up to next? Last week she decided to ride her horse along the motorway. I wonder what she's going to do next week!

be up to and get up to #29 (permalink) Thu Dec 09, 2010 10:42 am   be up to and get up to

Hello Alan,

According to your explanation my question would be:

Are get up to and be up to synonyms?
I read: 1.I wonder what the children getting up to.
2.I wonder what my neighbor is up to.

Thanks:
Kati Svaby

Hi.

The addition of 'get' simply emphasises the activity and often in a lighthearted way suggests that the activity is unusual or possibly amusing.

What are you up to? suggests you are simply finding out what someone is doing.

What are you getting up to? also has the sense that you are asking what someone is doing but there is also the idea that you think what they are doing is unusual because you can't work out what they are actually doing.
