If you were to describe the perfect method of learning English (or any other language for that matter), how would you do it? What would you say is the secret to success when it comes to mastering the English language?

The perfect method is yet to be found, I think. Now, one of the best incentives to learn a language is probably having a special friend who speaks it (and can't speak your own language!). Another ideal solution is a stay in a country that speaks the language in question. If this is not feasible, we should try to get as much regular exposure to the language as possible.

One way to learn quickly is to spend some time in a country in which the language is spoken.

If I have the requisite cash, and I want to improve my Spanish-speaking skills, I'll go to Cancun, Acapulco, or maybe Madrid.

There is no perfect "secret" to learning English. For me, and I swear by this, it's constant practice. It's a matter of finding or creating opportunities not to learn English, but to use it anytime and anywhere.

I’ve only just casually bumped into your post, Tom -- something must be wrong somewhere (probably on my end), because I’m not being notified of replies as regularly and reliably as I used to. Sad

Madrid is a good choice, I'd say. It may not be half as exotic as Canc?n or Acapulco (at least to Europans!), but you’re bound to be less exposed to English here than in the Mexican tourist meccas. This makes it an ideal place to learn or improve Spanish, unless, for some reason, you prefer Latin American Spanish (not that there are such great differences between all the variants). On the other hand, people tend to speak faster here, which might be a bit of a challenge to some beginners of Spanish.

Even more ideally, though, you should try and go to all kinds of different places -- you know, the more perspectives, the better!

I wonder if it is true that you know nothing about a foreign language ,and you move to a place where people speak it , gradually you will learn some or may be good at it !( no special language training) Rolling Eyes

Hi all
I quite agree with Conchita that the perfect way to master the language is to stay in a country whose language you learn.I think it's the best and the quickest way to achieve one's goal. The other day I was invited to the conference held by foreign delegation. Their speech was quite distinct and clear to me but along with it I learned many useful word combinations that stood me in good stead later on.

Both 'the secret to' and 'the secret of' are correct.

Incredibly, though, some foreigners manage not to learn the language of their country of residence, even after many years. You would think this is much harder to achieve.

Hi Conchita, there was something wrong with the email notification system on our end and I have fixed it. Can you please tell me if you are now receiving the emails again?
Thank you.

I did get your post straight away, Slava. Thanks a lot for your efforts! Yet I'm still not receiving all the emails. Perhaps this only happens with threads started prior to your fixing?

Anyway, don't you worry about that, since I can always check for replies directly on the forums.

Hi Conchita, thanks a lot for giving me your feedback. It is possible that you won't be receiving any notifications about threads that had been started before I fixed the bug. However, you should get all emails from now on. That's important because some of our users don't check the forum for new posts every day and might simply forget about it if they don't get an email.

Hi all,

The one of the best ways to learn lenglish with the right accent is to work in a call center.

Hi sureshcris,

I don't think it's that important to speak English with 'the right accent', whichever it may be. Making oneself understood is much more important.

Hi sureshcris

You've got a good point there. You'll know if your accent isn't "right" in a hurry if the people who call can't understand you. Have you worked in a call center?

Pity though the poor people who call a call centre!
