I can understand the whole meaning of the sentence but the 'came over' here is really ambiguous to me. Is it:

1. = (an expression of anger) came over to his face = visited his face; or
2. = came up over his face = showed all over his face; or
3. = not a phrasal verb but just came (as a result) over his face?

Hi,

I would say that 'came over his face' indicates spread over his face/appeared on his face. It suggests that the facial expression came about gradually.
