It's going well, thank you!

Not bad, how about for you?

But I think it rolls better if you say "How's it going?" rather than "How is it going?"

Hi,

Some other responses: Fine, thank you. Musn't grumble. Not too bad, thank you. Mustn't complain. Couldn't be better.

Alan (first)... wow, two of your responses ("Mustn't grumble" and "Mustn't complain") are SO English (ie:British)... makes me think of the traditional English stiff upper lip.

somewhatsmart .... In Canada (and the US, I think) , the question is often phrased "How goes it?" or (and in Canada only) "How's she going?". Typical response are:

"Not too bad."
"Alright"
"Okay"
"Fine"

The actual possibilities are just about endless

.
Yes, I'd agree that a response such as 'Mustn't grumble' would be unlikely in North America.

A few more possible responses:

Never better.
Great.
Can't complain.
*So-so.
*Awful.

* (Use the last two very sparingly and only with friends who might actually want to hear further details about why things are not going well.) ;)

"Good!"

To which one could reply, "Really? What good are you doing today?"

hehe

The question really is what is 'it' in the phrase 'How is it going?'

I would say that the 'it' refers to the general state of world/universe as it directly relates to person being asked the question.
