Hi teachers,

The map was so confusing that we had to ask the pollice.

The map was confusing so that we had to ask the pollice.

What is the difference between the two?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jupiter,

The word you want is police. In your sentences:

Quote:
The map was so confusing that we had to ask the police.
The map was confusing so that we had to ask the police.

we can see two types of consequence. It is really a question of emphasis. In the first one asking the police was a direct consequence of the map being confusing. In the second one the link is not so direct but is more of a result of the map being confusing.

Hi!

What makes me wonder in the given sentences is wether it would be better to use "needed" instead of "had".

I mean "have to do anything" sounds like "there is no other way" while "need to do something" offers some else possibilities. This is at least my poor Embarassed comprehension of that.

Could anybody please shed some light on this? Thanks in advance.

Hi Michael,

You make a super point there! I was so engrossed in the 'so ... that' problem that I failed to see what you have just pointed out. Good thinking and I agree with you.
