Hi,
As it stands, the expression can mean that end of the swimming pool that isn't deep in contrast to the other end, which is called the deep end. If you want to know about its possible use of it in a figurative sense, you'll have to tell me the context.

Hi Alan
This is the line which is told by Richard Gere in between the conversation with Julia Robert in movie "Pretty Women".In that she is a hooker. The context is that she wants to take a bath before leavining the room so she(Julia) asked to him (Richard) "Mind if l, um, take a swim in your tub before I go ?" then he told to her "Not at all. Just stay in the shallow end.".
Now Please Help Me .

Hi,
As I said, he means in the end of the pool which isn't deep.

Saloni ... I have seen the movie although I don't recall the line.
To 'stay in the shallow end' can figuratively mean to stay where things are safer, or not become too deeply involved in something that could have difficult or dangerous consequences. Perhaps Gere was saying that 'you can stay and take a bath, just don't think of getting too involved with me'? |
