more:

the spins = everyone who's ever been really drunk knows what these are -- the room "spins"; you feel dizzy; you feel like you need to hurl.

hurl = vomit, throw up

blow chunks = vomit, throw up (Wayne's World! Party time, excellent!)

piece = musical composition ("That Mozart piece -- Piano Concerto in A -- is lovely.")

piece = gun

gat = gun (1980s-1990s urban slang)

wad = bunch (usually tightly wound/grouped)

wad of cash = good deal of cash (unless they're all $1 bills, I suppose)

blew his wad = wasted (or simply spent) his wad of cash. There is also an obscene use of this phrase which nobody should use (or infer) in pleasant company.

gnarly = cool ; nasty (check for context)

funky = cool (almost always connotes coolness, unless someone is referring to old milk or something obvious like that)

hitched = married (John and Johnette got hitched yesterday, for Pete's sake!)

For Pete's sake = can you believe that?! ; for goodness' sake! ; gosh darn it!

fair-to-middlin' = okay, average

jet = go (usually immediately -- 1990s urban slang) ; "Man, I've got to jet."

Yo prezbucky

We ain't talked before but I jus' wan'ned to let ya know that yo' postings're always informative and way funny, dude. Wink

Seriously: When I endeavored to learn English as well as possible I soon noticed that -should I ever want to successfully communicate with the average American- I'd need to learn slang. White slang, black slang, east coast, west coast, southern.. What helped me most to achieve that goal was pulp literature and the autobiographies of famous Americans, among them jazz-legend Miles Davis who introduced me to the numerous ways one can use the MF word <g>

'later

Ralf

p.s.: Nashville, huh? First thing coming to mind is country music

I'm glad that you think of music when you think of Nashville. As for me, for three-fourths of the year Nashville reminds me of sweat.

and

when you say "east coast" and "west coast" make sure that you pronounce them like this:

eas coas

wes coas

same with east side and west side (eas sigh, wes sigh)

if you want to be truly authentic.

hehe

...terms for being drunk:

I am... ; he is... ; she is... ; they are... ; we are...

- Tanked
- Wasted
- Inebriated (this is actually the technical term)
- Sloshed
- Slammed
- Three sheets to the wind (old term, but still usable)
- Destroyed
- Blitzed

that's enough. hehe
