The poem 'Happiness' by Carl Sandburg and its meaning? #2 (permalink) Thu Dec 14, 2006 19:49 pm   The poem 'Happiness' by Carl Sandburg and its meaning?

I ASKED the professors who teach the meaning of life to tell
me what is happiness.
And I went to famous executives who boss the work of
thousands of men.
They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though
I was trying to fool with them
And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along
the Desplaines river
And I saw a crowd of Hungarians under the trees with
their women and children and a keg of beer and an
accordion.

I think it's fruitless to try to figure out what an author meant when he said/wrote something. Who can know but him or her?

I think that the poem means this:

Happiness must be experienced; it cannot be defined by words.

while I am not generally a fan of free verse (Leaves of Grass, for instance, reminds me more of a lyrical-philosophical journal than a poem), that "poem" by Sandburg makes sense.
