PSAT 2006 question #1 (permalink) Sun Dec 17, 2006 23:58 pm   PSAT 2006 question

This is from REA(research and education Association) PSAT 2006 volume pg. 22.

"In the broadest sense, the decisions made by legislatice majorities reflect community interests, although such interests are also represented by the executive and judiciary. Only at the federal level is the judiciary independent of direct political control, under the system of seperation of powers and checks and balances." from Peter Woll and Robert H. Binstock, America's Political System, 4th edition.

What do the authors mean by "judiciary independent of direct political control," control of what?

Thank you!
also what does the judiciary, legistlative, and executive branches do?
