Where are the mentally retarded in your country?

In the US, they used to lock these people away, keep them at home, etc. Now, if they can think as well as, say, a 5-year-old, many of them are trained for jobs.

I frequently see a man of about 50 who works at a pizzeria. He talks to me a lot -- usually about baseball -- and I would guess his mental ability to be around that of a 4- or 5-year-old. However, there are many jobs he can do. Sometimes he carries an advertising sign and greets people. He knows all the company's rules as to when he should and shouldn't carry the sign (not in the rain, not when the weather is below a certain temperature, not for too many hours, etc.). At other times he cleans the eating area of the restaurant. Sometimes he helps prepare the food.

This man is obviously very happy to have his job, and he puts a lot of energy into it. He likes the interaction with people new people every day, and he makes friend easily. There are many similar people in the same situation, and I think they would suffer a lot if they were kept at home all day, or in a special institution.

As long as the person doesn't drool all over the food, I don't mind too much..
