Your third link is to a Japanese site. Since the English version of the site has been removed, it's a bit hard for me to comment on it.

More examples of the same:

http://wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp/jepa/

I wonder if the Japanese examples are a result of mis-hearing the word "headquarters", a difficulty in pronouncing/sounding the "s" in plurals, or a question of countable vs non-countable nouns being different in English and Japanese.

Where Americans would just say "the new plant" or "the new warehouse", Germans in the same company will talk only about "the greenfield project", maybe because they're fascinated by the idea of building a new facility on empty land.

Or maybe because a lot of native-speaking ESL teachers are a little over-enthusiastic (and maybe out-of-touch with the real world) in providing, and drilling, the latest catchy expressions from the business world. Wink

They never got that term from me, because I don't use it.

Do you only teach items that you personally use?

First your little tricks were annoying, but now most of your smart-aleck comments inflict pain on my intellect.

Jamie said he doesn't use it, and not teach.

It's a waste of time to discuss for an argument's sake alone.

Molly, please stop.

Not to be a prick, but for the benefit of those who might not know the difference between "your" and "you're":

"First your little tricks were annoying..."

(I know it's a typo)

Again, you misinterpret my question. I know many ESL teachers who do in fact teach only the terms, etc. that they themselves use. Many of such teachers say that if they have enough language to get through life's exchanges, then why should a student need more.

So, you need to think before you reply/troll, Ralf.

And what do you think Jamie meant by "They never got that term from me"?

I know that you know that you know that I know your new favourite word. But I don't know that you know many ESL teachers. It surprises me, actually.

Well, I've spent quite a few years studying in ESL contexts, I married an ESL teacher and I'm helping out at my husband's academy in Spain. So, yes, I know a few. Now, do you want to move on?

A lot of Germans use the word "performance" when they talk about services or products. For example, in a company brochure of a German company I found the following phrase ".... we compare the performances needed by our client with the performances accomplished so far". This shows that it often isn't possible to just 'translate' phrases. Instead, you need to 'localize' or even rewrite the text.

Hi Molly

An interesting point you make concerning ESl teachers being "out of touch with the real world". But lets put some more flesh on those bare bones.

An ESL teacher may be out of touch with the "real world" as their real world may not be easily visited reguarly.
They see where they come from as their world, and have lost touch with it.
I must say sometimes new English coining of phrase or street language passes me by. Could it be the dreaded age factor ; )

They may be book orientated, trust their material, so teach phrases only created by publishers/writers.

They might be living in an area where they have little access to the "real" English world due to the standard of living or the geographical isolation.

Is the "business world" you mention a real world though?
It is full of artifice and jargon that can be understood only if you are in the fold, or the clique.
It would be interesting to see how many forums users would know often used business phrases such as;
career profiling, mission statement, blue sky thinking, leaverage, take ownership, upskill or turn key.

Also maybe you ignore some sides to your argument. Like the pittence some ESL teachers receive for payment makes them expand into this "real world".

Can you survive on an ESL wage, or "blinkered" mentality and live in this "real world" ?

cheers stew.t.

And students' learning may be affected by that situation.

Don't most native-speaking ESL teachers choose where they go for work? Here in Spain you can get around 18-23 Euros an hour for business English classes - a good salary. If a teacher knows that and decides to go work in Mexico, for example, it's his/her problem.

Hi Molly

You seem to show little sympathy for ESL teachers, the choice of location may not always be determined by the individual, what of connections to the location? People move ore than just for a job.

There is some truth in that students need to be part of that clique, in order to be able to understand it.

Where does the over-enthusiasm of ESL teachers stem from do you think?

An over enthusiastic or motivated teacher is surely better than a robot, a burnt out or a lethargic one.

cheers stew.t.
