Como estas? (sorry, imagine that the accents are in the correct spots)

It's taken you longer to write your explanation in brackets, as two accents only need two extra keystrokes -- remember: first the accent and then the letter! :) How awfully patronising this sounds!

What you've written is correct, too, but can have a different meaning to the one intended, as you probably know. Compare:

?C?mo est?s? = How are you?
?Como estas? = Like these? (though 'estas' as a pronoun should carry the 'tilde' on the 'e': ?stas)

But to answer your question: Estupendamente, y t?? (great, and you?).

The floor needs mopping #17 (permalink) Wed Jan 03, 2007 18:07 pm   The floor needs mopping

This isn't really passive, though. The gerund is a noun in it, so there's really no passive, as far as I know. Look at this:

"This car needs a good washing!"
"They need a tough scolding."

So you're dealing with a noun there, rather than a real participle.

Agreed, the gerund is a noun. However, I still feel that a construction like "the floor needs mopping" has a passive meaning, since what is really meant is "the floor needs to be mopped", not "the floor needs to mop".

Your last two examples have a different construction, where, perhaps due to the inclusion of the indefinite article, the passive idea is more remote (but still lurking there somewhere, in my opinion :) ).

My PC is back to its antics again, so I'm not able to open the video file.

Anyway, congrats to you and your team!

No, I've never been to the Philippines, but there are a lot of Filipinos here, so I've talked to them and eaten their food, including that delicious, atomic purple dessert that looks like cake but is made from yams! Many Americans think this all-natural dessert must have some kind of nuclear purple food coloring, and they won't try it.

One of the reasons I know about all those languages is that in linguistics school we had to analyze their processes of changing words to get various meanings. Most of the exercises involving infixes are from Philippine languages.

Here is a typical conversation between me and a Filipino student on the first day of a class:

Quote:
Me: What's your native language?
Filipina: A language of the Philippines.
Me: Well, obviously, but which one?
Filipina: Tagalog.
Me: Is that your native language?
Filipina: Yes, that's the official language of the Philippines.
Me: What language did you learn from your mother at home?
Filipina: It's a different language.
Me: Visayan? Ilocano? What?
Filipina: Visayan.
Me: Then why did you tell me your native language was Tagalog?
Filipina: I didn't think you'd know.
Me: Why didn't you tell me anyway?

Here's a conversation I once got into with a newly immigrated Filipino when I worked in a factory:

Quote:
Me: You don't have the scissors, do you?
Filipino: Yes!
Me: Will you give them to me, please?
Filipino: I don't have them.
Me: You don't have them?
Filipino: Yes!
Me: Well, I need them. Please give them to me.
Filipino: I don't have them.
Me: DO YOU HAVE THE SCISSORS?
Filipino: No.
Me: So, you don't have them.
Filipino: Yes!

That's cool, Jamie

What exactly does an atomic purple dessert taste like?

hehe

...love the adjectives.

It's made of purple yams, sugar and milk, and it has a generic, unidentifiable cake flavor.

Tom, alias prezbucky, alias hehe (you can find the story of his aliases in some of his first posts) was answering the following (rhetorical) question of Jamie's:

"And how about the way the people in Louisville, Kentucky, pronounce the name of their own city!".
