She told me that one of the things she wanted to buy while we were at the mall was a flannel...Turned out she wanted a "wash cloth" but it was an amazingly long time before we finally understood each other on that topic.

This is why I tried overseas to teach the most transparent term for something, rather than the "standard British" or "standard American" term. "Flannel" is not transparent, in the washcloth sense, especially because most of them are not made of flannel anyway. However, anyone can put together what a washcloth must be, even if they come from a country that says "flannel". There were some American terms I didn't teach abroad as standard for similar reasons, but unfortunately I can't remember them now.

Did you have to ask her for clarification?
That was the problem, Tom. I didn't think any kind of clarification was necessary because I thought I'd understood her perfectly. And since it's not unusual to look at a lot of different things when you're in a mall, I just thought she was getting side-tracked -- just like I do whenever I go shopping. Wink

Or did she finally gravitate to the appropriate spot for her wash cloth, before any formal query was made?
It wasn't until she'd picked up a 'flannel' that she liked and asked me something like "What do you think of this flannel" (as opposed to "this pattern" or "this one") that I finally got the message. Laughing

-- LOL. Let me guess: When you say you're just going into the grocery store to get milk, finding that "milk" takes you about 45-60 minutes, and you exit the store with a great deal more than milk.

hehe

I spent many an after-school minute in my mom's car, waiting for her to "just get milk".
