Hi everyone, I'm Lena #1 (permalink) Fri Jan 05, 2007 0:06 am   Hi everyone, I'm Lena

hello,

my name is lena. i'm currently a sophomore a german high school and wonder if i should apply for admission to a college in the US next year [intended major neuroscience or double-major psychology/linguistics]
unfortunately, this plan seems to be irreconcilable with my desire to go to medical school one day, as my parents won't be able to pay tuition for medical school.
nevertheless, i hope for an opportunity to go abroad sometime.

i'm preparing for the SAT as well as SAT Subject Tests (Latin, Biology, World History) and the TOEFL. in addition i might take some AP-exams.

hope i'll get in contact with people who are in a similiar situation here.
happy new year
lena

Psych and Linguistics are both awesome... i'm not much of a scientist (hehe -- my requirement was fulfilled by a class called Plants and Man, where I got to brew beer).

If you're considering Psychology, my alma mater -- University of Wisconsin-Madison -- is extremely strong in Psych.

They're also world-renowned in biotech/bioengineering/genetics ... if it's cutting-edge science (which anything related to the brain is, I'd imagine) in which you're interested, Wisconsin is a great place to consider.

As for Linguistics, I took a class, and it was cool. I'm not sure where UW is ranked in Linguistics.

if you want to hold onto a piece of home, the state of Wisconsin is known for its German heritage... and there are places on or around the UW campus at which one can drink German-style, listen to live polka music (hehe), etc.

One of those is called the Essen Haus (or House... can't remember how it's spelled).

Hi everyone, I'm Lena #5 (permalink) Sat Jan 06, 2007 20:28 pm   Hi everyone, I'm Lena

Welcome Lena,

I got to say we have two things in common, one, we both are new here...he he and two,we have nearly the same name. Friends and family call me Nina but my real name is Lina. I was told that my mom wanted to name me Nina Kareena but my father insisted on arabic name that has beautiful meaning, Nur asLINA.

Anyway, you mentioned about your desire to go to medical school.Going abroad to study is a great thing but if you want to be a neurologist,I think first you have to study to be a common doctor. After completing the course, only then you can specialize to be a neurologist.Correct me if the situation is different in your country.

Well, when one is doing a course to be a doctor, I think it`s best to do it in one`s own country because it involves a lot of observing cases/illness that you commonly have in your country. This is however,my impression of medical studies after seeing my little sister pursuing them. She is entering her third year now.

Unless you want to work abroad. It might be a good idea to study abroad to prepare yourself. But even if you don`t get to study abroad for your first degree, you can always do the 'specializing' overseas, later.Preferably the US perhaps? Wink

Anyhow, good luck and all the best for your SAT. Oh, I do remember having all the exams and constant fear of not being able to do your best. But don`t worry too much, Que sera sera Wink
