Hi

Let's just imagine a company (an agency, etc) named 'Dreamers' that make you some offer (services or, maybe, some kind of business collaboration).

What is your first feeling induced by the word?

Even though I’ve managed to find a number of companies that have the name (with variations), I’d say that dictionary meanings of dreamer are rather 'negative' (when taken to present a company image).

Quote:
a person who spends a lot of time thinking about or planning enjoyable events that are not likely to happen
© Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary

Quote:
1. One that dreams. 2a. A visionary. b. An idealist. 3. A habitually impractical person.
© The American Heritage Dictionary

What do you think of this?

To me this suggests that the company offers services to dreamers. Anyway, I like the name, whether it refers to the company people or to its customers -- it has a different, exotic ring to it.

It's either a company that sells mattresses and other bedding supplies, or it's a company that books very unusual vacations, i.e., people's dream vacations.

It could also be a consulting firm that peddles business advice to startup entrepreneurs, but a company like that would be less likely to choose that word for their name.

Thanks a lot for your clearness, Conchita and Jamie.

Definitely, my "research results" doesn't include a company that wouldn't obviously be covered by the 'guide' you gave.

Hi Tamara,

'Dreamers' to me is a lovely word, full of hope and inspiration. If you can't dream, what's the point of imagination?

What about this:

by John Lennon)
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
Nowhere below us
Above only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

A

Hi!

Nice lyrics that Alan mentioned, it?s worth a dream unfortunately a dream only, at least, currently.

If you trust in a company Tamara mentioned initial there might be another lyrics that fits to you better:

(Dreamer by Supertramp):
Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said dreamer, you?re nothing but a dreamer
Well can you put your hands in your head, oh no!
I said far out,-what a day, a year, a laugh it is!
You know, -well you know you had it comin to you
Now there?s not a lot I can do

Dreamer, you stupid little dreamer,
So now you put your head in your hands, oh no!
I sais far out,-what a day, a year, a lough it is!
You know,- well you know you had it comin to you,
Now there?s not a lot I can do,

'Dreamers' agency – hmm ... they’re creative but/or … not reliable? :) Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:59 am  'Dreamers' agency – hmm ... they’re creative but/or … not reliable? :)

Hi

Thanks for…

I understand what 'dreamer' can mean.

In Russian the word also has several quite different meanings… and it very depends on the context how it is interpreted by people.

dreamer
visionary; illusionist; knight errant; abstractionist; castle-builder; day-dreamer; fantast; John-a-dreams; rainbow-chaser; stargazer; fancier; idealist; Sunday thinker; far-out person

They all have equivalents in Russian. And vice versa. )

I - personally - really like the meaning (and the feeling…) Alan has referred to…

But my question was asked in the context of business.
It was caused by the intention of one good guy from Ukraine (Smile) to name their new advertising agency 'The Dreamers'.

I first expressed him some my personal doubts (in particular, the word with the definite article would sound quite… heavy for Slavic ears – when it's spoken by phone, for example),
second – I made some brief research (having found several bedding suppliers, some designers (in different areas) and travel agencies, and so on – all within the Jamie’s definitions),
and third – I asked the ESL forum. Smile

Now he seems to have changed his mind. Taking into account this and some other reasons… against the name.
Having nothing against the attractive word intself (and its lovely meaning).

I offer my version of the song, building on the exploits of Conchita & Alan in this thread:

Imagine there's no champagne
No Burns's Auld Lang Syne
No ball a-droppin'
For billions at midnight

Imagine all the people
Sitting on the couch

Whoo-hoo

You might say I'm a jerk
...not into having fun.

But a new year starts every day...
Not just January one.

I'm proudest of "Imagine all the people... sitting on the couch."

That chicken-scratch was not meant to disrespect Mr. Lennon or his family/friends/fans.

Call it a Weird Al moment.

Hey, I just found out that you're a singer.

Excellent!

We'll have to do a transatlantic duet sometime or something.
